Packing Checklist for a Long Homestay Stay in Da Nang
Staying at a homestay is a different experience from a hotel — you won't always find travel-size shampoo, a spare toothbrush, or house slippers waiting for you. If you're planning to stay in Da Nang for a week or longer, packing a bit smarter upfront saves you daily trips to the corner shop for things you forgot. Here's a checklist based on what we usually see long-stay guests wish they'd brought.
1. Basic personal items
Homestays generally don't stock the same range of toiletries as big hotel chains, so it's worth bringing:
- Your own toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, and shower gel — whatever brand you're used to.
- Indoor slippers. Many homestays provide a pair, but supply can run short during busy periods.
- Your own towel if you're staying more than a week and want to swap it out more often than the homestay's laundry schedule allows.
2. Sun and heat protection
Da Nang gets strong sun for most of the year, especially from April through August. A few things worth packing:
- Sunscreen — you'll want to reapply often if you're at the beach or riding a scooter outdoors.
- A wide-brim hat or cap, and sunglasses.
- A lightweight sun-protective jacket, especially useful if you're getting around by scooter a lot.
- A reusable water bottle, both to save money and cut down on plastic waste during full days out.
3. Scooter-riding essentials
If you're renting a scooter or electric scooter to get around — by far the most common way to explore Da Nang — pack a few extras:
- A packable rain poncho. Rain in Da Nang can show up suddenly, especially during transitional months.
- Gloves and a face mask if you're sensitive to sun, wind, or road dust.
- A small waterproof pouch for your phone and documents, handy at the beach or in a sudden downpour.
4. Electronics and paperwork
- A power bank — useful on long days out when you're taking lots of photos and can't easily get back to charge.
- A plug adapter if your devices come from abroad, though Vietnamese outlets accept several common plug types.
- Copies of your ID and driver's license if you plan to rent a scooter — some rental places ask to see the original or keep a photocopy on file.
5. Season-specific items
If your trip falls in the rainy season (roughly October to December), pack a light windbreaker and shoes that dry quickly. In summer, go light and breathable, bring swimwear, and consider a compact quick-dry beach towel instead of a bulky one.
6. Small things people often forget
- Basic personal medication: motion sickness tablets, something for an upset stomach, and adhesive bandages — handy on longer day trips out to Son Tra or Ba Na Hills.
- A small travel laundry bag, useful if your homestay doesn't offer laundry service or you'd rather hand-wash a few light items.
- A compact day bag separate from your main suitcase, for whatever you're carrying around on outings.
