Da Nang Breakfast Guide: What to Order and Where
One of the things we appreciate most about living in Da Nang is breakfast. Nothing fancy, nothing expensive, but varied enough that you could pick something different every morning for weeks and still not run out of options. If you're visiting and want to eat breakfast the way locals do, here's where to start.
1. Mi Quang — the dish you shouldn't skip
Mi Quang is closely tied to Da Nang and the surrounding Quang Nam region, and while it's eaten throughout the day, it's a classic breakfast order. What sets it apart is the broth — much less liquid than a typical noodle soup, almost more of a light sauce — served with crispy grilled rice crackers, fresh herbs, and roasted peanuts on top. Every place makes its broth a bit differently, so it's worth trying a few spots to find the version you like best.
2. Banh mi — quick and satisfying
If you're heading out early, a warm, crusty banh mi is the easiest option. Da Nang has plenty of small carts and shopfronts open from early morning, often near markets or along busier streets. Fillings range from pate and Vietnamese cold cuts to grilled meat or a fried egg — you can order something familiar or try the fully loaded local version.
3. Lighter noodle soups for the morning
Beyond mi Quang, Da Nang has other noodle soups that work well for breakfast, along with rice porridge and seafood-based soups. If you'd rather not start the day with something spicy or heavily seasoned, look for porridge or a lighter broth-based soup, which are common at small family-run eateries in residential neighborhoods.

4. Sidewalk coffee — part of the ritual
In Da Nang, breakfast usually comes with a cup of coffee. Traditional drip coffee or iced milk coffee at a simple sidewalk cafe is a common way for locals to start the day — part meal, part a moment to sit and slow down before the day picks up. If you like a livelier atmosphere, try sitting at a sidewalk spot along a busy street during the morning rush.
5. How to pick a good breakfast spot
- Look for places already busy with local customers in the morning — usually a sign the food is fresh and sold through the day rather than held overnight.
- If food safety is a concern for you, take a quick look at how ingredients are handled and stored.
- Don't hesitate to ask the vendor to go easy on spice or seasoning if you prefer something milder.
- If you're staying near An Hai or the city center, it's easy to walk or take a short electric scooter ride to try a few different spots over a few mornings.
6. Eating on local time
Locals in Da Nang tend to eat breakfast early, and many spots open while it's still dim outside, quieting down well before midday. If you want the full experience of a busy, lively local breakfast scene, aim to go earlier than you might on a typical vacation morning.
