My Khe Beach vs. Non Nuoc Beach: Which One to Choose
Da Nang's eastern shoreline is essentially one long, continuous strip of sand, but locals give different stretches of it different names. The two names guests ask us about most often are My Khe and Non Nuoc. The question is almost always the same: "Are they really that different, and which one should we go to?" The short answer is that it's the same sea, but the experience is not the same at all — so here's what actually separates them.
Location and how far you'll travel
My Khe sits right alongside the An Hai area, directly across the Han River from downtown. If you're staying anywhere on the east side of Dragon Bridge, you're usually a short walk or a few minutes' ride from the water. That's exactly why My Khe ends up being the default beach for most visitors: it's inside your daily radius, and going there requires no planning whatsoever.
Non Nuoc is further out, at the southern end of the same coastline, tucked beneath the Marble Mountains and on the road toward Hoi An. From downtown or An Hai you'll ride a stretch down the coastal road to reach it. It's not far enough to count as a day trip, but it's far enough that you'll consciously decide "are we heading down there today?"
That difference in distance drives nearly everything else.
Atmosphere: lively or quiet
My Khe is busy. Early mornings, Da Nang locals come out to swim, stretch, and jog along the shore. Late afternoons bring a wave of visitors and families. On summer weekends the public swimming sections can get genuinely packed. If you enjoy the energy of a city beach — chatter, volleyball, drink stalls, kids running around — My Khe is your kind of place.
Non Nuoc is the opposite: wide, open, and noticeably calmer, especially on weekdays. There are stretches where you can walk a long way before running into another group. The sand is broad, and the view back toward the Marble Mountains behind you is lovely. If you want a genuinely quiet morning, or you'd like photos without a few hundred people in the background, Non Nuoc is far easier.
Facilities and what's nearby
This is the clearest difference, and the one people most often overlook when choosing.
Around My Khe you'll find just about everything: parking, changing rooms and freshwater showers at the public swimming sections, loungers and umbrellas for hire, seafood restaurants, cafes, convenience stores, and a dense cluster of homestays and hotels within walking distance. You can swim, rinse off, walk to breakfast, and be back in your room without any special preparation.
At Non Nuoc, the infrastructure is thinner. There are resorts and some places to eat, but they're fewer and more spread out. Bring your own water, a towel, and a change of clothes rather than assuming everything will be within sight when you arrive. In exchange, that sparseness is precisely what makes it feel restful in a way My Khe doesn't.
Waves, water, and staying safe
Because both beaches sit on the same bay under the same monsoon pattern, the water behaves similarly: calm and easy to swim in through spring and summer, then progressively rougher and cooler in the late months of the year when the northeast monsoon arrives. Mornings are generally calmer than afternoons at both.
The real difference is supervision. My Khe's public swimming sections have flagged safe zones and lifeguards on duty during set hours — which matters a lot if you're with young children or you're not a confident swimmer. On the emptier stretches of Non Nuoc, you may well be swimming with nobody watching. The rule we give every guest: swim only inside the flagged zone, never go in alone on a deserted stretch, and never swim after drinking.
One more thing worth knowing: rip currents can appear on any long sandy beach. If one pulls you out, don't try to swim straight back to shore — swim parallel to the beach until you're out of the current, then come in.
Which one fits your trip
- Short trip, only two or three days: My Khe. Don't spend precious hours in transit — My Khe lets you swim at sunrise and still make it to everything else.
- Traveling with kids or older relatives: My Khe, for the lifeguards, showers, shaded seating, and food right there.
- Want quiet, staying a while, planning to read on the sand: Non Nuoc.
- Combining with the Marble Mountains or heading to Hoi An: Non Nuoc is essentially on the route, so it's an easy add-on.
- Into water sports, board rentals, or a group day out: My Khe has far more of that on offer.
Honestly, the best approach is to do both. Swim at My Khe in the early morning because it's convenient, then take one afternoon to ride the coastal road down to Non Nuoc and stop at the Marble Mountains on the way back. That coastal road is beautiful in its own right and tends to become one of the trip's better memories.
A few tips that apply to both
- The best swimming windows are early morning before the sun gets harsh, and late afternoon. Midday summer sun in Da Nang is fierce.
- Wear sandals you can slip on and off — midday sand is hotter than you expect.
- Don't bring valuables to leave on the sand; public sections often have lockers, but not everywhere does.
- Use water-resistant sunscreen and reapply after you come out.
- An electric scooter is a great way to travel the coastal road: quiet, easy to stop for photos, and no worrying about fuel stops.
