Marble Mountains and Hoi An: A Combined One-Day Trip from Da Nang

If your Da Nang trip is short but you still want to see both the Marble Mountains and Hoi An's old town, you don't need two separate days for it. The two spots sit close enough together that with the right timing, you can climb the mountains in the morning and still catch Hoi An glowing under lanterns that same evening.

Morning: the Marble Mountains

The Marble Mountains sit right along the road between central Da Nang and Hoi An, which makes a morning visit the natural choice — you'll beat the heat and stay on route for the rest of the day. This is a cluster of five limestone peaks, each named after one of the five elements, riddled with natural caves and centuries-old pagodas.

• Wear proper walking shoes — there are plenty of steps, and some cave sections get slippery.
• If you've got the energy, climb to the higher levels for a wide view over the coastline and the stone-carving village at the base of the mountains.
• About 1.5 to 2 hours is enough to cover the main highlights without feeling rushed.

Once you're done, grab lunch at a spot along the road before continuing on to Hoi An.

Afternoon: Hoi An's old town

There's another stretch of driving between the Marble Mountains and Hoi An, but it's short enough that you'll still have the whole afternoon free to explore.

• Wander the old town on foot, taking in the weathered tile-roofed buildings, assembly halls, and small souvenir shops.
• Head down to the Thu Bon riverbank, where you can hop on a basket boat or a small boat for a short ride along the water.
• If you're after custom clothing, Hoi An is well known for same-day tailoring shops.

Evening: Hoi An under lantern light

This is the moment most people are waiting for. Once it gets dark, the old town lights up with colorful lanterns that reflect off the river, giving Hoi An its unmistakable evening atmosphere. You can float a paper lantern down the river, browse the night market, or just settle into a riverside spot and take it all in.

Getting around

Since this itinerary covers a fair distance, including the longer stretch to Hoi An, it's worth thinking through your transport:

• Ride a motorbike yourself if you're comfortable with longer rides, want full control of your schedule, and like stopping for photos along the way.
• Book a private car or join a shared tour if you're traveling with young kids, older relatives, or aren't confident navigating unfamiliar roads.
• Whichever way you go, start early so you get a full, unrushed morning at the Marble Mountains and don't end up racing the clock on the way back to Da Nang.

A few other things to keep in mind

• Bring a hat and sunscreen for the outdoor climb at the Marble Mountains.
• Hoi An gets busy in the evening, especially on weekends and around the monthly full moon, when the old town dims its electric lights and runs on lanterns alone — beautiful, but expect bigger crowds.
• Check the weather ahead of time, since rain affects both stops, particularly the climbing sections at the Marble Mountains.
