Nam O Fishing Village: A Quieter, Old-School Side of Da Nang
For most visitors, Da Nang means My Khe beach, the Dragon Bridge, sleek cafés and a lively, modern rhythm. But if you're staying with us long enough to want a different corner of the city — slower, older, more real — one of the trips we like to suggest is a morning at Nam O fishing village. Tucked into the northwestern edge of the city, right at the foot of the Hai Van Pass, Nam O feels like a piece of old Da Nang that's still hanging on: round basket boats drying in the sun on the sand, the salty smell of the sea, and people who still make their living from fishing the way their families have for generations.
Where is Nam O, and why go?
Nam O sits in Lien Chieu district, a little over twenty kilometers northwest of the city center and the An Hai area where most of our guests stay. It's a long-established fishing village nestled beside a bay, where the Cu De River empties into the sea. What makes Nam O special isn't grand architecture — it's the everyday atmosphere that so much of Da Nang has gradually lost.
Early in the morning, the beach at Nam O is where the fishing boats come back after a night at sea. You'll see fresh fish being bought and sold right on the sand, rows of round basket boats lined up, and locals mending their nets in the shade. It's the kind of experience you can't really find in a tourist zone — unpolished, unstaged, and full of ordinary life.
The rocky reef
The thing people mention most about Nam O is its rocky reef — a stretch of stone reaching out into the sea, scattered with boulders large and small. Around the end of spring, when the weather cooperates, these rocks are often coated in a layer of bright green moss, creating a scene that photographers love. If you time it right, it's a genuinely rare backdrop so close to the city.
That said, we have to be honest: the rocks out on the reef are quite slippery, especially where the moss grows, so wear shoes with good grip, step slowly, and be very careful — particularly with young children. The waves around the reef can be stronger than they look, so don't climb too far out toward the water's edge for a photo. No picture is worth the risk.
Fish sauce and the famous raw fish salad
Nam O isn't only pretty — it's also one of the cradles of traditional fish sauce making in central Vietnam. The craft here goes back a very long way, passed down through generations and closely tied to the village's reputation. If you're curious, you can learn about how locals ferment anchovies with salt in large earthen jars over many months to produce a pure, deeply savory fish sauce.
The dish most associated with Nam O — and the one we always suggest guests try — is its raw fish salad (gỏi cá): fresh fish tossed with herbs, seasonings and toasted rice powder, eaten with rice paper and foraged greens. It's a very local specialty. Because it's made with raw fish, you'll want to eat it somewhere popular with locals, where the cooks know the dish well and the fish is genuinely fresh. If your stomach is sensitive to raw or rare food, think it over before diving in.
How to spend a morning in Nam O
From our experience hosting guests, Nam O works best as a relaxed morning or a late afternoon, rather than a rushed midday stop under the harsh sun. In the morning you catch the rhythm of village life as the boats return; in the late afternoon the light softens and the reef takes on beautiful color.
A few small suggestions to make the trip better:
- Wear shoes or sandals with good grip if you plan to go out onto the reef, and skip anything slippery.
- Bring water, a hat and sunscreen — the beach and reef areas offer little shade.
- Respect the locals' rhythm: this is where they work and live, so ask before taking close-up photos of people or their boats.
- Take your trash back with you. The village keeps its simple charm because people are mindful.
- Combine it with the scenery: on the way out or back, you can take in the view of the Hai Van Pass foothills and the bay on the city's northern side.
Getting to Nam O
From the center or An Hai, the easiest and most enjoyable way to reach Nam O is to ride an electric scooter or motorbike along the coastal and bay road heading northwest. It's a bit over twenty kilometers, the route is fairly easy, and you'll have sea views for almost the whole way. If you'd rather not drive, a taxi or ride-hailing car works too, but having your own wheels is far more comfortable when you want to stop for photos along the road.
