Homestay Near Downtown Da Nang or Near the Beach: Which Area to Pick
This is the question we get more than any other before guests arrive: "Should we stay downtown or near the beach?" It sounds like a small detail, but it quietly shapes the whole trip — what you do when you wake up, where you end up eating at night, and how much of each day you spend in transit.
The good news is that in Da Nang this decision is far less stressful than in most beach cities. Here's how we usually explain it.
First, a quick sense of the map
The Han River splits the city into two fairly distinct halves:
- The west bank (Hai Chau district) is "downtown" in the traditional sense: Han Market, Con Market, the Cham Sculpture Museum, dense food streets, and the Bach Dang riverside promenade.
- The east bank (An Hai, Son Tra, Ngu Hanh Son) is the seaward side: My Khe beach, quieter residential blocks, wider roads, and the route out to Son Tra Peninsula.
The key thing: the two halves are linked by several bridges — Dragon Bridge, Han River Bridge, Tran Thi Ly Bridge — and crossing usually takes about ten minutes by scooter. Whichever side you pick, the other side is not far. That's what makes Da Nang much more forgiving than cities where the centre and the coast are an hour apart.
Staying downtown: the trade-offs
What you gain:
- Food density. Long-running local restaurants, breakfast spots, sidewalk beer places and evening street food are heavily concentrated on this side.
- Walkability. If you're not renting a vehicle and plan to rely on walking plus ride-hailing, the west bank saves you money and time.
- Proximity to the markets and the in-city sights, which matters a lot on a short one- or two-night trip.
- Rooms on the smaller interior streets tend to be cheaper than anything with a sea view.
What you give up:
- Quiet. This is a genuinely urban neighbourhood — traffic all day, and the bigger streets stay lively late.
- Easy parking. Narrow lanes fill up fast.
- Morning swims. The beach is a bridge away, which isn't far, but "a bridge away" is enough that most people skip it at 6am.
- Sea breeze. On peak summer days you notice its absence.
Staying near the beach: the trade-offs
What you gain:
- Walking or swimming before breakfast. This is the single thing beachside guests mention most at checkout.
- Quieter nights, provided you pick a room set back a few streets rather than fronting the main coastal road.
- Wide, calm roads that are easy to ride and easy to park on — a real advantage if it's your first time on a scooter in Vietnam.
- Straightforward access to Son Tra, the Marble Mountains and Hoi An without crossing downtown traffic.
- Evening sea breeze, which makes a noticeable difference in the hot months.
What you give up:
- Value at the restaurants right on the seafront, which skew towards visitors and price accordingly. Walk a few streets inland and prices drop.
- Independence if you don't rent a vehicle — a beachfront room without wheels means more ride-hailing.
- Peace and quiet in peak summer, when the coastal strip gets busy and room rates climb.
The third option, and usually the best one
A lot of guests get stuck on the binary — downtown or beach — when Da Nang has a very comfortable middle ground: the residential blocks on the east bank, like An Hai. A few minutes' walk or a short ride from the sand, and a few minutes from Dragon Bridge to cross into the centre.
From there you typically get:
- The beach in the morning without getting on a vehicle.
- Dinner and a riverside walk downtown in the evening, then a quiet street to sleep on.
- Local restaurants right in the neighbourhood at neighbourhood prices, not seafront prices.
- Far easier parking than the narrow lanes on the west bank.
What you don't get is a sea view from your window. For most people staying three to five days, that's a trade worth making.
Pick by the kind of trip you're taking
One or two nights, no vehicle: stay downtown on the west bank. You'll see the most on foot in the least time.
Three to five days with a scooter or electric scooter: the east bank, either near the beach or a few streets back. Best all-round balance.
Families with young children: near the beach. Morning swim, back to the room for a nap, out again late afternoon — that rhythm only works when the sand is a few minutes away.
Remote work or a long stay: the residential east bank. Quieter for working, cafés nearby, and the beach at the end of the day.
Groups who want late nights: downtown, or An Hai close to the foot of Dragon Bridge so the ride home is short.
First time riding a scooter in Vietnam: east bank, without hesitation. Wider roads and fewer surprises while you find your confidence.
Four things to check before you book
Whichever side you land on, we always suggest checking these:
- The real distance, on a map. "Near the beach" and "central" are elastic phrases in listings. Open a map and measure it in walking mode.
- Main road or side street. A room on a big road is convenient and loud; a room on a small street sleeps much better.
- Parking. If you plan to rent a scooter or electric scooter, ask specifically about overnight parking.
- Which bridge is nearest. Almost nobody thinks about this in advance, and it quietly decides how long your daily crossings take.
