My Khe Beach: Best Times to Swim and Try Water Sports
My Khe is the beach everyone mentions when they talk about Da Nang, and for good reason — fine white sand, generally gentle waves for most of the year, and close enough to residential areas that getting there is never a hassle. Still, picking the right time of day and knowing a few basics makes a real difference in how enjoyable your beach time is.
The best times of day to swim
Early morning, roughly before 8 or 9am, is when most locals head to the water. The air is still cool, the sun hasn't gotten harsh yet, and the beach is noticeably less crowded. It's also a good window for a walk along the shore or some light exercise before the heat sets in.
Late afternoon, from around 4 or 5pm until just before sunset, is the second sweet spot. The sun has softened, the water feels pleasant, and this is usually when the beach is liveliest, as people finish work and come out to catch the breeze and watch the sunset.
Midday, roughly 11am to 2-3pm, brings the harshest sun of the day and isn't ideal for a long swim. If you do go out during this window, bring sunscreen and a hat, and avoid staying in direct sun too long.
The calmest season for swimming
Roughly April through August tends to bring calmer seas with fewer big waves, making it the better stretch for swimming and water sports. From around September through December, Central Vietnam enters its rainy and storm season, and waves can get larger and less predictable — always check lifeguard warnings before going in the water during this period.

Water sports you can try at My Khe
Along My Khe beach there's a range of water sport operators to choose from, depending on your taste for speed and adventure:
- Jet skis, banana boats, towable tubes: great if you want a quick adrenaline hit, usually short sessions that are easy to do as a group.
- Surfing, SUP paddleboarding: takes a bit more practice, best attempted on calmer, low-wave days.
- Snorkeling and short boat trips to nearby islets: these usually depart from areas near the Son Tra peninsula and suit travelers who want to combine swimming with a bit of sightseeing.
Before joining any activity, ask clearly about life jackets and safety instructions, and stick to operators near marked, lifeguard-monitored areas.
A few safety notes
- Only swim in flagged areas with lifeguards on duty, and don't drift beyond the marked zone.
- Check the warning flags before entering the water — if there's a large-wave warning, stay closer to shore or wait for another day.
- Children should always be supervised closely, even in water that looks shallow.
- Rinse off with fresh water soon after swimming to avoid skin irritation from salt and sun exposure.
